Young Maria had a challenging childhood. Her father was an alcoholic who got into trouble with the law, and her mother left her father, giving her up to be raised by her grandmother. Upon her grandmother’s death, she was sent to live in a boarding school where she learned more about her faith. She became a prayerful young woman who loved her faith. She eventually joined a Benedictine Community in Malta and spent the rest of her life in prayer and service to the poor.
