When the Emperor Licinius decreed that Christians must give up their faith, 40 of his soldiers refused to obey. They were ordered to strip naked and made to stand in the middle of a frozen pond overnight. The next day, their frozen bodies were burned. Christians secretly took the ashes, though, and devotion to the 40 men quickly spread.
