Benedict was born a slave to Christian parents in Sicily. He joined the Franciscan Friars Minor after serving as a cook for a community of hermits. Even at a young age, he was very patient, kind and devoted to God. Once when he was being harassed for his skin color, a passerby invited him to join a local Franciscan community. Benedict became so respected for his wisdom and holiness that he was made their leader. Eventually his fame spread, and many sought his advice. H is said to have performed miracles, including multiplying the poor order’s food supply.
