Within a generation of St. Patrick’s death, Ireland was overflowing with monks, some of whom left their monasteries to journey to other lands. One of these was St. Brendan, the abbot of Clonfert who traveled to Scotland and Wales. A fictional tale called The Voyage of described how the saint and his followers went on a seven-year voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, accompanied by birds who fed them.
