|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00am on of July, repeating indefinitely

(1854-1897)

Born into slavery, after the Civil War, Augustus went to Catholic school. He wanted to be a priest, but no U.S. seminary would let him, so he went to Rome to be ordained, becoming the first known African-American priest. Some fellow priests treated him badly, but in the end he won the respect of the whole U.S. church. “The Catholic Church deplores a double slavery—that of the mind and that of the body,” he said. “She endeavors to free us of both.”
