Pope Pius V was a Dominican Friar who became pope shortly after The Council of Trent. Big changes were called for in that council that would effect both the church and the civil world. The Church was very divided and in turmoil, so it was a tough job given to Pius. He had trouble with kings and queens who disagreed with the reform that he needed to implement.
