St. Cyril of Alexandria, the hot-tempered bishop of Alexandria who defended the teaching that Jesus was fully God and fully man, a teaching that Cyril said justified giving Mary the title, “Mother of God.” “Saints are not born with halos around their heads,” Franciscan Media notes delicately. “Cyril, recognized as a great teacher of the Church, began his career as archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impulsive, often violent, actions.” Fortunately, he moderated his approach by the time of his death.
